The line in GS.
Matt Kerr

Do ever feel like the course is coming too fast at you and you cant keep up?
Do you feel that you are unable to carve for more then 4 or so turns?
Can you ski technically well free skiing but cant execute the same skiing in a course?
Do you feel that you scrub the bottom of the turn?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions it is probably an issue with your line. Most people would think to raise the line so you start the turn from a higher point or earlier. The result of this can be similar then the questions above and cause waiting in the arc or a double turn.

View these photos below of Gen Simard. The point here is running the line longer into the turn. Gen here shows how patients can turn into efficient and fast skiing.
In the first photo you can see that Gen’s skis are aiming for about 2 meters lateral off the gate (this depending on terrain, course set and snow conditions). This is the trajectory to start things off for a good turn.
In the second photo you can see she has just started the turn when she is almost right above the gate. This happens no matter how aggressive her line is in G.S.
Most skiers would start the turn before this point and get pinched off by the gate and have a disruptive arc. I.e. slowing down.
As the Gen moves into engaging the skis (third frame) she is in good position in the line to create speed by carving into the fall line. You can see in the next frames the arc developing to the gate.
She has given herself the room to carve cleanly and effectively without sacrificing the speed. She did not need to lift the line or start earlier; she ran it longer with the right trajectory in the beginning of the turn so she can ski her best.

There are drills that will be use on the Pratte Camps to help you find the line.
